How to Know if
You Have the Holy Spirit in You I have frequently wondered whether I really have the Holy Spirit in me. I have also doubted whether other people really have the Holy Spirit in them. I am sure I am not alone. This is a serious issue for a person seriously trying to follow Jesus. For others who are less serious it doesn´t seem important. The Holy Spirit is the key gift of Jesus Christ to the world. It is the gift that saves us from being thrown away as ¨defective¨ by our Creator´s quality control department in Heaven. It fixes what is broken inside of us. It actually can make us ¨perfect¨- just like Jesus Christ - because it is Jesus Christ! The Holy Spirit is a portion of the spirit of Christ. To have the spirit of Christ inside of you is an incredibly exciting thought. Christ is one with the Creator and has all knowledge, wisdom, power at His command. We absolutely cannot be in control of all this knowledge, wisdom and power because Christ is the head, but just being in connection to it - being part of Christ´s body - is a breathtaking thought. For example, God can perform miracles through a person filled with the Holy Spirit. A ¨spirit¨ is the same as a ¨desire¨. If you have the ¨spirit of hunger¨ you desire to eat. If you have the ¨spirit of sleep¨ you desire to sleep. If you have an ¨evil spirit¨ you have the desire to do evil things. If you have the Holy Spirit you have the desire to do holy (or good) things. It is very simple. The Holy Spirit is therefore detected by what a person desires to do. If you desire to do good to everyone - even your enemies - then the Holy Spirit is in you. Toward the enemies of God the good is done to increase the anger of God toward them and the love of God for ourselves, thereby defeating them without doing evil: Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:19-20) Toward the people of God the good is done as to fellow members of the body of Christ. So to all, both good and bad, we are to do only good: As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:10) Be sure, however, that though God is longsuffering to the wicked He will curse those who hate Him. If you really, truly desire to do good to everyone - even people who hate you and want to kill you - then the Holy Spirit is in you. If you continue to obey God´s will that desire will increase and increase all the days of your life until your death when it is spread out back into the world to continue to grow: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. (John 12:24) The Bible says that Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb. He therefore always desired to do good to others and God blessed Him. His obedience to God was natural - like the obedience Adam had before he fell into sin and struggled with his own desires. The Holy Spirit continually increased within Him because He always did what God wanted. When He went to be with God in Heaven, he portioned out His enormous amount of Holy Spirit to His disciples. They each received a bit that they increased and passed on to others. The goal being that the Holy Spirit will be increasingly concentrated among those who love God and removed from those who hate God. The people of God will spoil their oppressors like the Hebrews spoiled the Egyptians before departing for the Promised Land. |
