Are You Living
in the Spirit or the Flesh? Basic to Christian doctrine is the belief that our spirits (desires) continue to live after the death of the body. Also basic is the belief that our spirit (desire) existed before we were born into our body. The body is only a temporary house (or temple) for spiritual worship. All things should therefore be seen in spiritual terms, but most people see everything in physical terms. We are a vessel for the spirit within us. That is how God sees us. So we should also see each other in that way. Physical beauty, strength, riches and age do not matter to God so they should not matter to us. We should take care of our spirit before we worry about our physical life. Spirits (desires) are sometimes strong and sometimes weak, and sometimes clean and sometimes evil. Spirits can travel from person to person. Spirits can be summoned. Spirits can be cast out of people. If someone tells you about a delicious meal they had, then they can give you the spirit of hunger. If someone tells you about the righteousness and glory of God they can give you the Holy Spirit. If you think long enough about a delicious meal that you had you can summon the spirit of hunger. If you meditate on and praise the righteousness and glory of God long enough you can summon the Holy Spirit. If you talk about disgusting and filthy things you can cast out the spirit of hunger. If you talk about the fire of hell, judgment day and the wrath of God you can cast out evil spirits. If we love God a little, then our spirit is clean and weak. A strong evil spirit (desire) can therefore overpower our weak spirit and cause us to fall into sin. For example, a Christian weak in faith could be tempted to steal money because a strong evil spirit (desire) overpowered him. But a Christian who loves God very much, and is therefore strong in faith, would not be overpowered because his spirit (desire) for God is strong. But our spirits are weak. Our only hope is that when we obey the gospel of Christ we open the door to the Holy Spirit which is perfect strength. When we have the Holy Spirit we can simply ask like Jesus ¨Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil¨ and God will protect us and cast out any evil spirit that we foolishly let in by evil thoughts or deeds. Evil deeds open the door to evil spirits and good (or holy) deeds open the door to the Holy Spirit. People in the Gospels who were healed of evil spirits by Jesus had been overcome by evil spirits (desires) and were too weak to free themselves. Like an alcoholic or a drug addict they were overcome with a desire for something that was evil. The evil spirits had names which showed the nature of their evil desires (greed, lust, murder, etc.) Jesus cast out the evil spirits by preaching His Word about the Day of Judgment, the fire of hell and the wrath of God. When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: (Matthew 8:16) Jesus was able to cast out the evil spirits because they feared the Spirit of God in Him. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. (Matthew 12:28-29) Jesus bound the evil spirit (strong man) in the body (house) because the power of the Spirit of God in Him frightened the evil spirits. Likewise, if a man has a strong love for God, like Jesus, he can cast out devils with true and frightening words of God´s judgment because the Spirit of God is in him. If a child is taught to do good to others from birth then that child will be free from evil and have the Holy Spirit. Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions. (Ecclesiastes 7:29) For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. (1 Corinthians 7:14) When born in the flesh most people are put under bondage to evil spirits (desires) because their parents teach them evil from their birth. These people must turn and become like children again to put away the evil spirits (desires) they have received in their life. They have to stop doing everything but what Jesus Christ commanded in His Gospel to do this. By denying themselves, giving to others, suffering mistreatment and forgiving their enemies they starve the evil spirits (desires) within them. The evil spirits grow weaker and weaker day by day and eventually the people become like innocent, newborn children again. Then they can begin to grow strong in the Holy Spirit through suffering many evil things. Suffering in this world has the effect of increasing the love of God. This world is designed by God to teach wisdom to men, and wisdom is the love and fear of God. And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding. (Job 28:28) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever. (Psalms 111:10) Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. (Proverbs 4:7) When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2) The Holy Spirit (desire) is love for God, because God is holy. All who do not have the Holy Spirit hate God and will be cursed. Therefore the primary goal of a wise man is to seek the Holy Spirit, sell all that you have to purchase it and never forsake it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. (Matthew 13:45-46) |
